LC14 MAD Unit Update

LC14 receive an email  in regards with our MAD unit on safety around  buses.

Morning Amy,

I received your letter regarding the great work that was carried out by the pupils at West Melton Primary School. I think they have done an excellent job, and it is really good to see local children voicing their concerns and taking some action to address identified safety risks.

We will definitely go and see them and task the local Highway Patrol and Selwyn Sub-Area staff to increase speed enforcement outside their school. We will tag the students into anything we are doing so that they remain involved.

Thanks for the heads up on this.

Years 5 & 6: Persuading us to 'Make a Difference!'

We blasted off with a great opening speech in the finals about litter from Caitlin and how we can become a litter pickup groups. 'Save the water race' was the topic for Jorja's speech,  we had to think about how to "do the right thing".

Wow! Amazing information about endangered animals from Claudia.
A new playground would be very healthy choice for West Melton from Elise.
Deforestation was the topic from Chelsea. Calum's speech was about smoking, a very personal family story he shared with us.
The RDA (riding for the disabled) was Abbey's interesting speech topic.
And 'At My last school' was a humorous speech given by Charlotte.

Mrs Jackson was highly impressed with the standard and persuasiveness of the finalists speeches and how this can lead into the Selwyn speech competition at years 7 & 8.

Our winners are: 2nd place Calum M., and Jorja P. is the Winner of the Moa year 5  & 6 speech Cup.

Well done to all the finalist students.

Year 7/8 Speech Competition

The Moa team sat down this morning to listen to highly polished speeches from the year 7/8 students about how charities and people can make a difference. We enjoyed topics like:

  • Make a wish foundation from Kacie,
  • Pedal power not petrol power from Ally
  • Sheep need drugs from Sarah
  • Deforestation from Taylor
  • Making a difference about the health of NZ from Sophie
  • Risks of diabetes from Zane
  • And a convincing argument against animal testing from Olivia.

It was exciting to have our ideas challenged with new ways to think about everyday topics and ways we can personally make a difference.

We concluded by announcing the the speech winners. The 2013 year seven winner was Zane T. and Ally T. the year eight winner. The winner of West Melton Senior Speech Cup was Zane T.

We want thank Mr and Mrs Overton for their judging and important feedback and congratulate all the year seven and eight finalists for their fantastic speeches.
